Complete Scooter vs Custom Build - Which to choose?

Scooters... super simple when you've been in the industry for so long like us but being a new comer, custom builds, complete scooters, weights, heights and so on, it can certainly be a bit of a minefield.

Hopefully this blog will give some guidance on one of the most asked questions... do I need a Custom Build, or can I get a complete scooter?

Now, both options have their pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your rider level, budget, and personal preferences. Let’s break it down to help you decide, but first, let's answer a few questions.

What is a Complete Scooter?

A complete scooter is a pre-assembled model designed by a manufacturer with all the necessary components. It’s ready to ride straight out of the box and is often designed with specific skill levels in mind, from beginner to pro.

What is a Custom-Built Scooter?

A custom-built scooter allows you to select each component individually, from the deck to the bars, wheels, and grips. This option provides full control over the scooter’s aesthetics and performance.

On to the breakdown - this should clear up some of the most asked questions about each type of scooter.

Complete Scooter

Pros of a Complete Scooter:

  • Convenience – No need to worry about compatibility or complicated assembly; just unbox, put the bars on, and ride.

  • Affordability – Generally, complete scooters are more cost-effective than custom builds.

  • Designed for Performance – Many manufacturers build their complete scooters for balanced weight and durability.

  • Great for Beginners – Ideal for new riders who aren’t sure what components suit their style yet.

Cons of a Complete Scooter:

  • Limited Customisation – You’re restricted to the parts and design chosen by the manufacturer. And parts like Titanium bars, you won't find on a complete scooter.

  • May Outgrow It Quickly – As skills improve, riders may want to upgrade individual components.

  • Limited Sizes – You're stuck with the size chosen by the manufacturer, which can sometimes be slightly too tall, or slightly too small.

Custom-Built Scooter

Pros of a Custom Scooter:

  • Full Customisation – Choose parts that match your riding style and preferences.

  • Higher Quality Parts – Riders can select premium components that might not be available on complete scooters.

  • Unique Look – You're likely to be the only person with exact set up which gives you a one of a kind!

  • Better Performance – Tailor the scooter for specific things like styles of riding (street, park or both), durability, or weight.

Cons of a Custom Scooter:

  • Higher Cost – Buying individual parts tends to be more expensive than a complete scooter.

  • Requires Knowledge – Ensuring compatibility between parts can be tricky, especially for beginners. Luckily we've taken some of the leg work out for you with our custom builder!

  • Time-Consuming – Selecting and assembling parts takes more effort than purchasing a complete scooter

Summary!

If you’re new to scootering on your first or second scooter and want a most affordable, easy option, go for a complete scooter. If you’re serious about the sport or looking to step your riding up by building a setup that perfectly suits your needs, investing in a custom scooter is the way to go.

A great way to get the best of both worlds, try starting with a high-quality complete scooter from a reputable brand like Core, Ethic or Drone and upgrade parts as you progress.
